I might be a bit scattered when doing this.. I'm seriously working on to many fronts at once. those above, and this one are among those that I have open in SAI right now.

I might be deviating a bit from the whole manga approach that I'm gunning for here. but if all goes well the character in this scene will be rendered with some more manga-esque qualities.

Ok, damn...
it's been waaay to long since my last post here. needless to say, I've got some major commitment issues going on...
sorry about that.

Anyway!

here are some new drawings that should work here:

These two are for the light novel-project mentioned before in this thread.

These are some extremely early scetches of an OC of mine(not entirely human). but I'll leave her backstory and biology for a more appropriate thread.

And finally I'll leave you with this one, me trying to create some flowy dynamic action. (also from an original story concept of mine)

Hi again!
My creative flame went out there for a while, but after checking out the forum after so long I kinda got the urge to create again.

This is another character design for the light novel I've mentioned before. I pasted in the original scetch from one of the pictures I've already posted. Shameless, I know.. but hey, I had space to fill and at least it's the same character.

Any Ideas for small details are most welcome. she looks kinda bland right now. maybe some stripes on the skirt? or a koi fish-tattoo or something, I don't know

Some of those sharp teeth hanging from the bell of the dress, you know, to help with her motions. Honestly when you have a dress as her main outfit, it's going to be bland regardless, so you'll have to pretty much alter the dress in some way to make it unique, especially when holding such a weapon. Unless you like the idea of normal people with weapons.... well it's hard to say since you think it's bland

Maybe a neck tattoo or a leg tattoo. At least with a neck tattoo, that one pose would showcase it nice, and something else added on the lower body would help with The entire appeal in a way. It doesn't need to be crazy to give her a simple boost in appearance.

IDK, if this makes any sense to you, just some suggestions

Sometimes one can confuse bland with dissonant or inconsistent. The dress and clean appearance can work really well if they somehow imply that she's accustomed to fight with such weapons while using that type of dresses. Maybe a small messenger bag where the weapons are folded and can be carried while not in use. or adding that she uses tactical gloves when fighting can make just the right amount of contrast to make her bland and menacing at the same time. Think about how she will carry the weapons, act, even avoid getting dirty while she's using her dress and a lot of ideas will appear giving a more consistent menace.

Another idea might be that she uses the hair ribbon as a way to choke people to death... Again, the devil is in the details.

I haven't been to these forums in forever. The thread title caught my eye, since a certain kind of aesthetic is what a lot of people are going for. Most people just use discord art communities to share their work and ask fro critiques. But, today, I feel kinda nostalgic. Although, it probably would take forever for more artwork to be shown. That space girl up there is pretty cute and I love the gesture of the girl with the tootghy sword thing.

This is basically what I've been doing to get the "anime" look. Just draw a person relatively realistically then simplify and exaggerate certain forms. The hardest part is to render the face without losing stylistic appeal. Maybe I'll update this here when I'm done.

Really good advice you all, I agree that the simple fact that it is a dress makes it inherently bland. and adding smaller details to it might not be such a bad Idea.
I personally would just like to switch it out to something cooler, but since its basically a friend's OC, I can't really take such liberties.
oh well, I'll figure something out eventually...

Well ok... so I've forgotten how to quote someone properly, but tipsypaipai:
Cool approach, I'm definitely going to try and retrofit a more realistic sketch, as I'm sure I have at least a dozen somewhere.
It would be awesome if you felt like sharing the finished picture here when its ready!

I don't really have any real progress to show right now myself... sorry...
BUT
I made some time to just faff about in photoshop, and as wierd as it is, I had a really fun time trying to make double jointed legs for a human.
So I ended up trying to clean them up a bit, and it turned out pretty good, if I dare say so myself!

That's actually pretty cool design you got there, with the horse legs without her being a centaur. @Kavvan
Although, it's not your typical anime/manga design, you got nice flowing lines and you're making great use of your visual library.

Not the same picture from before (because for some reason I decided to complete another painting instead). But this is what it would basically look like if I completed it.

Wow, that is really good! Great use of colors and light.
Did you use any references to get that good creasing on the clothes?

Yes, I was adapting a photograph study into my own anime style. I don't remember where the link for the ref is but it was a cosplay photo. Thanks!

Man, I just found this literal treasure that's been gathering dust in a drawer for the past 10 years or so. Sooo many cringy sketches from those early weeb-years.
