Mysterious Joker TV Anime Gets New Series ANN nEWS

2nd season about phantom thief premiered in April

The October issue of Shogakukan's Monthly Corocoro Comics magazine announced last Tuesday that a new series of the Mysterious Joker TV anime series has been green-lit. The magazine did not specify if the new series would be the show's third season, but it will provide further information on the series in future issues.

In Hideyasu Takahashi's Kaitō Joker (Mysterious Joker) manga that inspired the anime, there is nothing in the world that the mysterious phantom thief Joker cannot steal. He goes after one treasure after another in unpredictable capers with seemingly miraculous tricks.

The first television anime series premiered last October, and the second series premiered on April 6. Crunchyroll streamed both the anime series (under the title Joker) into several countries as they aired in Japan.

Takahashi began the manga in Shogakukan's Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic magazine in 2007, although it then moved to the main Monthly CoroCoro Comic magazine. The manga won the children's category of the 58th Shogakukan Manga Awards last year.

Kōji Yanagi's Joker Game Novels Get TV Anime Adaptation ANN NEWS

Ghost in the Shell: New Movie director, Production I.G to adapt spy novel
The September issue of Kadokawa's Monthly Newtype magazine will announce on Monday that Kōji Yanagi's Joker Game spy mystery novel will receive a TV anime adaptation. The project will also launch a website and an official Twitter account.

The original novel is set in 1937, before World War II begins in earnest. Lieutenant Colonel Yūki of the Imperial Japanese Army forms the "D Agency," an army intelligence outfit under his command and tutelage. Army General Staff attaches Lieutenant Sakuma to observe the unit's performance. D Agency casts a wide net to find agents beyond Japanese military personnel, and Yūki establishes D Agency's tenets, which go against IJA doctrine: "Don't kill, don't get killed, don't get captured." With this, Yūki trains a team of operatives who conduct missions against domestic and foreign powers.

Kazuya Nomura (Ghost in the Shell: New Movie, Robotics;Notes) will helm the project at Production I.G. Shirow Miwa (Dogs: Bullets & Carnage) is in charge of the original character designs.

Yanagi published the original Joker Game novel (pictured above) in 2008. The novel won the Nihon Suiri Sakka Kyōkai-shō (Mystery Writers of Japan) award in 2009. Yū Irie directed a live-action adaptation of the novel, which premiered in Japan on January 31. Yanagi followed up the original novel with two sequel novels — titled Double Joker and Paradise Lost — in 2009 and 2012, respectively.

Teaser Site Opens for 'Sushi Police' 3D CG Short Anime ANN NEWS

3 men crack down on bad Japanese food restaurants in short series
An official website for a 3D CG animation project called "Sushi Police" opened on Wednesday.

Director Tatsushi Momen of creative studio KOO-KI is working on the project. The Fukuoka-based creative studio has previously won awards at Cannes Film Festival for its commercials.

KOO-KI shopped the "Sushi Police" project at Cannes in May. The promotional poster received a nod from The Hollywood Reporter's "Cannes Poster Awards," which recognize "most amusing and over-the-top promotional materials from the festival's market."

KOO-KI's website refers to the project as a short anime series.

The title refers to a term used by western news sources such as The Washington Post to refer to the Japanese government's initiative to offer official seals of approval to overseas Japanese food restaurants. The 2006 initiative was a response to overseas restaurants that labeled themselves as Japanese food restaurants, but served other Asian foods, or just bad food. The story follows three men who investigate foreign restaurants.

The project will be one of several anime displayed at the "Rinpa-nimation: Rinpa 400th Anniversary x Newtype 30th anniversary Rinpa Homage Exhibition" at the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair this Saturday. The exhibition will feature visuals from various anime titles in the style of the historical Rinpa school of Japanese painting.
