movie, cartoon and anime villains are extremely stupid when it comes to planning ending the world or a shortage of something, food and water, causing a flood or some other disaster. hey dumbass, you're screwed too. said villains or traitor needs food and stuff too, and if thats gone, well it backfired on them didnt it? YES!

Terraformers, anime about a super race of roach men and humans with mutant powers... that need a drug to activate it... why???? who knows
they arrive on mars but before they get to land, the bugs are already inside the ship... how did they know they were gonna have visitors and how did they even get out into space? turns out one nation, China betrayed earth and everyone.. okay but that doesnt explain how the bugs invaded, worse they have many breeds of roach natives and the freaking pyramids... and its empty.. why? inside are the blue prints for the ship and escape pods.. ok and who put this hear? the first group sent to mars? if so did they get to live or what? ugh already too many plot holes and so many flashbacks.. "sigh" didnt know this was a shounen anime like naruto and bleach. omg. the flash backs are insane and take up half the episode. anyways. Russia finds about the traitors when it could of been anyone else, even the first group that were wiped out long ago, but no, it is china. the leader has the nerve to call the leader of Russia the leader? REALLY? so to get to my point. WHY THROW AWAY THE MISSION AS IF YOU DONT CARE ABOUT THE FUTURE FOR HUMANS? YOU'RE STILL SCREWED, YOU'RE NOT LEAVING ANYTIME SOON, WHY BETRAY YOUR OWN KIND? YOU'RE WHAT, 10 OR 20 VS 10,000,000 BUGS?
GOD, THIS TROPE MAKES NO DAMN SENSE

TerraForMars really did get away from its basic plot about a troubled youth who has the hots for his senior coworker and their adventures in a low-rent apartment in a bad neighborhood.

Villains like that seem unrealistic and stupid until you take a look at our actual world. We're destroying our eco-system by burning through a non-renewable fuel resource, and the companies that control that fuel resource go to great lengths to keep us dependant on us.

A plan to destroy the earth makes all the sense in the world if you're too arrogant to believe that it will hurt you, or you realize that it'll hurt you and you just don't care.

It all comes to writing. A good writing can show that a flawed plan is part of a basically flawed villain, even if his motivations are good and clear, but a bad writing will always look cartoonish. Thing is, I feel most people is ok watching a bad story as long as it has some neat visuals

My mind always goes back Muv-Luv Alternative, where a race of huge man-eating bugs is invading the earth. It rises above the tropes because the bugs aren't sophisticated or even have speech, they are just a swarm of horribly ugly creatures that roam around destroying everything in their path. At one point in Total Eclipse, a villain commander (who is American) who has turned against the UN trying to salvage what they can of the world from these monsters says "I won't attack the BETA (aliens) because they are messengers of God." And, basically yea, I can see exactly that thing actually happening and can picture a lot of people saying that very thing in those circumstances.
We delude ourselves too much thinking we're such wise and smart race of beings, while some of us are insane lunatics who would willingly slaughter millions for some freaky cult, shrieking that they're saving the world from destruction. Just look at those nutcases in London who tried to shut down airports and highways while they howl and cry that the world is "coming to an end" and them trying to prevent normal people from travelling to work or getting on a plane somehow is our salvation and the rest of us just need "awareness" to come round to their "point of view"... fucking crazy lunatics.
It's often a badly done trope but doesn't have to be cuz it has some merit in the real world!

Even the ones that are intelligent enough to understand that they are poisoning their own well for temporary gains are just so greedy they don't care because by the time the well water is too toxic to drink and starts killing those that rely on it, he will have long ago died of old age and it will be his children or children's children that end up paying the reaper's tab.

As for super villains who aren't destroying the world as a side effect of their greed, stupidity or arrogance, but rather out of pure hatred, those people are the types we see in today's headlines as suicide bombers or spree killers. They are suicidal/homicidal people who attribute their terrible suffering to society and humanity at large and they want to get even. They hate themselves and all of humanity and want to see the world burn from ground zero.
