Saw it on TV.

BD/DVD listing also show it's a 1 cour show. For the amount of humor in this, I find it hard to take this show seriously. Shin is like a poor man's Glenn Radars.

The first episode is now up on Funimation: https://www.funimation.com/shows/wise-mans-grandchild/episode-1-title-3/?qid=

Episode 1

Shin died, and nearly died again after being reborn, but Merlin saved him just in the nick of time and he has since been trained to become a talent mage. Too bad he's totally clueless when it comes to sociability as he's sorely lacking in that, and Merlin just brushes it off as if it were nothing. So pretty much it's all backstory here as Shin sure has been through a lot, but not to be taught common sense, that's not good. Not a bad start here, but of course the real test is straight ahead as now he meets people his age after spending almost all of his life around adults.

Surprised this is on at 11:30pm, felt like they were going for a more all-ages demographic from that episode.

I remember reading the light novel a while back, it wasn't bad. If I remember correctly it's not a harem which is nice.

Well, I am not impressed so far, but I also don't like judging based on a single episode.

So far I see absolutely no reason for the Isekai plot. He remembers his old life, so what? What does that bring into this world? It would make more sense just to say he is a genius with magic. The tone feels a little like Familiar of Zero.

It's his knowledge of science that's part of the reason he can create such strong original magic, and

Impressively generic even for an Isekai - not a single original thought has gone into it as far as I can see which must be some sort of achievement.

It even had the templated saving random girls in an alleyway scene.

Not in itself terrible but just incredibly un-original plus I thought it was a pretty poor first episode with too much introduction and too little action - probably worked better in its non-anime original.

I'll give it the old 3 episodes try but shaky start so far.

Oh the level generic gets so much worst. (they throw in all the High School tropes) I am going to keep watching though I enjoy a good train wreak from time to time

Considering how many Isekai there are out there I really can't see why they made this an anime?

Even the farming one or one of the cooking ones would have been better and they aren't great?

Realist Hero would be a much better anime IMO

Aside from being a generic mix, it also was the weirdest costume mix. I feel like they just threw everything and anything into the bag that at some point recently had been getting raves in anime (isekai being one) and gave it a good shake. And what we ended up with is this anime. Now I'm not saying that is what actually happened- especially since someone wrote that they read the LN, but it feels random. I mean I was seriously jolted by Shin in that suit suddenly in what until then had been a fairly Medieval like setting. And it just got worse from then on. That they rushed through time in the first episode, I can overlook, but why would Merlin Wolford give his grandson a name like "Shin"? None of the other names are the least Japanese. Or did the baby talk and tell him his Japanese name? Really? So WHY?? I won't even get into plot.

I enjoyed the introduction to MC. I think this could be episode 0 and we begin Shins adventure at the Magic Academy next week. As a audience we will understand his powers in magic and sword fighting because we saw his training. We also saw he hasnt made a friend his own age.

I found it generic yes but breezy and fun too. The animation is fine and the cast have decent interplay.

It also seems he doesn't really have a social filter, which could be interesting.
