Hmm - not sure why main character didn't just kill the Gman and run off with her friend? Maybe it makes more sense to the Japanese?

Probably because she isn't a murderer....He hadn't done anything but be nice to her...while her "friend" went in there and just started murdering people in order to steal something. Her friend even told her to forget she existed, and that the person she knew from childhood didn't exist anymore. She probably wouldn't do something as impulsive as murdering some guy until she figures out what is actually going on. Chances are if she did kill him, Veronica would have still run off without her.

I don't see much to complain about after only a single episode. If this is going to be 2 cours, there is a lot more story to tell.

In long form the problem is that the state has declared people like the Gman, the MC and the MC's friend to be criminals just because of how they are.

The Gman has turncoated against people like himself in order to help the state hunt down others like himself (and will presumably hand himself in like a good boy when/if he complete's his task) who are declared criminals even if they don't actually do anything wrong.

He then demands that the MC join him in his turncoating and help hunt down her childhood friend or get imprisoned.

In no reality is the correct response sure let me sign up to help the state oppress others like me and my friend - yay!

I know the Japanese culture is a lot more submissive to authority but even so this is surely pushing it?

Mariya (the MC) didn't become a Fairy Soldier until near the end of this episode, so she probably doesn't have any prejudices against people like Free.

We don't really know enough of the story to say that fairy users are outlawed outright. Mariya was working for the Mafia after all and Veronica went into that theatre and just started killing people, even if they were Government or Mafia drones, she was putting the innocent public at risk.

This is why I said the premise sounded familiar to Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka. You have fairy users working for the government, and you have fairy users who are terrorists or working for the mafia, and the government fairy users are trying to stop them.

Sadly we do - the Gman said 'yours is an illegal existence' to the MC.

It's a bit like suddenly finding your gay in Brunei and being asked by a Gman to help hunt down other gays.

But she was already a criminal...working for the mafia and using her fairy to stop Free from capturing a thief/terrorist. That could be why she was automatically illegal, because she used her fairy to interfere with a government agent.

It's possible - let us watch and see. I'm feeling an X-men kinda story personally.

I'm in it for the long haul. I see it going one of two ways, personally. They're gonna pull a Samurai Seven like situation against the gov't, or they go Wolf's Rain and be chased across the country. I prefer the Wolf's Rain angle just because this show's aesthetic reminds me of it so much.

can also watch this on Hulu for those who have it. to be honest, it's an interesting retelling of what happens to soldiers after the war, with a bonus, fairies! and those are cute and adorable fairies either. it started out strong, seems it might hold some sort of confidence swing, at least it wasn't feeling rushed and I have to agree that is one adorable little creature.

I was disappointed by the first episode. This is the one show I’ve really been anticipating this season and I didn’t hate the first episode but it didn’t really leave any sort of lasting impression. I may hold off on watching this for a few episodes and see what general public consensus is on it before I pick it up again.

Sorry to ask but, who exactly are people looking up to to decide what's good or bad and what to watch nowadays? Is it the same people? Just want a idea of the crowds.

Now the only question is whether this is continuous or a split-cour show seeing that there is another show by Toho coming up next season that could displace it. Hopefully this means the storytelling will get better and that the first episode was just there to be an attention grabber with a better-told and more-focused story coming.

Episode 2

So after an episode that was more about letting us know what to expect rather than setting a foundation, it briefly explains Marlya's background about how she is unfortunate and how she joined the mafia in order to find Veronica. Now that she has met her again, the next step is to reconcile and bring her back to being the girl she once was. And this time, it's another character meeting an old comrade who is now fighting on the opposite end of the spectrum as Free and Wolfran meet again, but now as enemies. While the first episode was kind of over the place, this one is less so and while the story hasn't exactly been established, it's still nice to watch the action and a great soundtrack to go along with it.
