Synopsis

His late father always said that a useless man should strive to be useful, so to that end, third-year high school student Nariyuki Yuiga dedicated himself to becoming a high-achieving student in his school, despite his history of poor grades. In order to give his destitute family a better life, his ultimate goal is to obtain the special VIP nomination, a prestigious scholarship covering all future university tuition fees. Although Nariyuki could feasibly be a shoe-in for the nomination, he is constantly overshadowed by classmates Rizu Ogata and Fumino Furuhashi in mathematics and literature, respectively.

To his delight, Nariyuki receives the nomination, but there's a catch: he has to tutor his two star classmates, who are each hopelessly mediocre at the other’s subject of expertise! To make matters worse, the subjects they are horrible at are the same subjects they want to pursue for their future. As the time to submit university applications draws nearer, Nariyuki must find an effective tutoring method for the girls before it's too late.

The first episode is now up:

Episode 1

Rizu is unmatched in math, while Fumino is a literary prodigy, but they absolutely suck in each other's subjects, and yet that's what they want to do for their careers. And then there's Nariyuki who is a jack of all trades and is up for a VIP recommendation if he can get those two girls into their college of choice, which is going to be an uphill climb. And even more than that, what Nariyuki said was a mistaken for a love confession. This is set up much like The Quintessential Quintuplets, except that the girls are not sisters, all while the girls are geniuses in something, just not what they want to do. Should be a fun show to say the least.

Eh, I think it was an okay episode but a bit average besids the character emotive expressions.

Seems they're toning down the fan service for the TV airing. I mean, it has its cute moments for sure.

The premise is similar but I'm guessing it goes in a different direction - half of quintuplets was sisters pretending to be each other and the other half is mystery so this is probably not that comparable in the end?

The artwork is nice, but the buildup for the girls' motivations felt lazy and unconvincing. There's a big gap between "I want to find my mom's star"/"I want to understand people" and "I want to do that for a living". And as well as Quints pulled off a similar premise last season, We Never Learn falls well short in establishing it's premise.

Very mixed bag.

I like this manga more than 5toubon (though it's debatable how comparable they are past the initial premise), and there were some good parts, but the gap was pretty big between the scenes that looked good and the ones that didn't.

Not entirely sure Fumino faired very well in her character adaptation either.

Ep.1

We Never Learn: BOKUBEN is pretty much like last season's The Quintessential Quintuplets, except that the girls are actually really smart but some to fail in the other subject. Oh and lots not forget the girls are not related, so that another change to Quintuplets. When it comes to our MC Nariyuki Yuiga he's pretty much one of the smartest person in school however seems to always lose to Rizu and Fumino. So it's a surprise to him that he will have to tutor them in each other subject which they aren't good at. I like that in the first episode they show a lot of Nariyuki past and that he wasn't always smart and that he study his ass off.

Another thing is he is dirt poor so no wonder he wants the VIP nomination since it will pay for his education in any university he chooses. When it comes to the rest of the episode it's pretty funny and looks like we will get a lot of cute moments from Fumino. From Rizu looks like we will get fan service moments like her rubbing her boobs against Nariyuki and from the preview getting her boob grab by next week girl Uruka.

The only thing i didn't like was how some fan service moments was taken out. I read some of the manga so i know they took out a shower scene. I wonder why they did it? They could have just used steam to cover up the girls. Well other than that its a pretty good start, so looking forward to more.

I think the glasses girl's motivation seems the weakest, especially considering that when he asked her to do some reading comprehension drills, she scoffed at it and barely tried. Doesn't sound to me like she really cares about liberal arts. I'm not sure why the school cares if they go to their university of choice...and the pink haired teacher seems rather hostile

It does seem a bit tough to have to air this right after quintuplets had its run. It will probably take a while to separate from that, seeing as how some of the art style is very similar as well. That being said, the first episode was fairly good at laying it all out, for someone here who has not read the manga anyway. It perhaps seems a little on the side of "mildly nerdy with a tendency to pontificate", as if they want to try to explore more of the practical side of social education for the younger audience maybe? Even the character design seems to side more with somewhat "academic" facial looks than some of the other typical school romance shows out there.

The comedy and romance seems fairly rote in the first episode, so we'll have to see how they can keep it interesting, and if it can actually differentiate from the other series.

They do appear to have very shallow motivations, maybe the author fleshes those out over time.

For the scientist: Just focus on medical psychiatry, win-win.

For the writer: Ok she's screwed, actual astronomy isn't the right way to go.

Premise and motivations seem no less or more lame than most of the other shows of this type that have gone before it.

I won't be getting hung up on that.

It's nicely animated and I like teenage embarrassment comedies so this will do for me.

That was my impression as well, both girls are chasing after some abstract idea of the field they're bad at, while neither is all that interested in engaging in the nuts and bolts of actually learning the foundations of that field. Literature girl sleeps through math problems, math nerd acts indigent about actually applying reading comprehension. Both girls come off as obstinate, rather than passionate about their goals, which leaves the entire premise looking like little more than a thinly veiled excuse to start building a harem.

Knowing nothing about this particular story beyond the description, the OP, and the teaser, I'm guessing next week we'll get a girl talented in sports that wants an academic scholarship and a girl talented in that academic field that wants to learn sports medicine.
