Episode 3

Now the backstory of the guy who saved Hyakkimaru is explained. Jukai used to serve Shiba and ended up killing Kaname's father in the war, and wanting to atone for his actions in the war he decided to become a doctor after the war. And then came Hyakkimaru that he helped raised. He helped train Hyakkimaru to become a strong fighter that can defend himself, and then he is sent off on his journey when he sees a real leg growing after slaying a demon. A nicely done backstory that was to show just how rough Jukai had it in life, and how raising Hyakkimaru gave him a reason to live after everything that had happened.

Really interesting to see Hyakkimaru's past.

Also, I find it clever how they handled the style of the background story episode by making it black and white similar to the classic series. Quite an emotional episode too.

Episode 3

Wow, what a brutal opening scene! I couldn’t help but cringe when that ear got cut off!

Aw, I think this is the best episode so far. I feel so sorry for Jukai.

Also, smol Hyakkimaru is adorable.

I loved how the flashback started off in black and white and then the colours came back when Hyakkimaru was leaving.

Such a great episode.

Really like how this series is shaping up story wise, as the presentation is reliably good.

I suppose I should have seen Jukai's connection coming, given that the previous episode hinted that Dororo was only the second soul that stook around Hyakki for a lengthy amount of time.

A few points for me to look forward to:
- Hyakki's brother lived a much, much different life, and I expect some clashing in the future
- Kaname might make a return for Jukai's life.
- Perhaps specific demons own particular parts of Hyakki?
-- What negative impact does the gradual restoration have on his abilities and fighting (which people have stated before in this thread)
- What would his father think of their presumed eventual reunion?

Looking forward to more.

He's going to get weaker as this goes on isn't he.

The more parts he recovers the more of his advantages he'll loose. In regaining his nervous system he can now feel pain once more. If he gains an arm, he looses a blade, gains eyes he'll loose his Aura sight.

I don't think I've ever seen a series where the hero is destined to get weaker as he draws closer to his end goal.

So far, dark but impressive. Love the style and little symbolic touches like the stone Buddha carving holding a child in the background where the Doc slips off the path and falls down the hill to discover the boat.

I will say that Dororo strikes me as... awfully cute for a little boy. I shall be interested to see how the character develops.

Episode 4

The next demon comes in the form of the curse sword Nihiru. It totally transformed Osushi's brother Tanosuke into a killing machine that slaughtered their village. Hyakkimaru defeats it initially, but then Dororo came into possession of it and he tried his hardest not to let it take over his mind. And then Tanosuke came into possession of it again. In the end, he destroyed Nihiru while Tanosuke paid the price, but he seems to be at peace. Pretty tragic that was going to show that mind control is a terrible thing. As such, Dororo can now hear again.

Interesting story but a little too somber for my taste.

Too bad that one of the first things he has to hear is that lady crying. I'd prefer a similar story but with a more upbeat setting.

Episode 4

So this week's antagonist involves a tsujigiri known as Tanosuke the Slaughterer. Whilst not as good as last week's episode, I still enjoyed it. Hyakkimaru gets his hearing back.

I absolutely love the background art in this anime. So beautiful.

E4

I'd say this week's episode was more predictable, but I liked the touch with the red glow on the sword only. It's a shame the brother was too far gone with the curse.

I wonder if there's a metaphor of sorts for each limb returning, like Hyakki got his hearing back today, as the Sister's desperate pleas to her Brother fell on deaf ears?

Perhaps someone here can remind me if they can think of one for the leg.

Never posted before but had to discuss this somewhere.

This is my favorite of the season so far. This hits all my favorites (historical, monsters, episodic, great art, great sound/music, and no sugar coating). It reminds a lot of Samurai Champloo another favorite of mine - obviously not direct comparison though. I loved how Samurai Champloo had such a modern opening for being a historical show. Dororo has the same feel to me.

Anyway glad you are discussing it here!

I checked out this series and so far I'm in love with it. I really love the fluid animation, the op and ed, and the storytelling is great. And Dororo is pure adorableness!

Hyakkimaru must be going insane suddenly getting all these new senses.
