LN guys, please don't jump in, remember explanations only if they can't spoil anything
Looks like this will probably be one of threads I'll avoid reading this season because I don't want to be spoiled by the squatters.

Hopefully this doesn't become a LN discussion thread like some other shows.

+dismembered and half-eaten in the process, yyeesss please

it's about time to make this isekai-nonsense with forcing other people to "saaa-a-aving the wo-o-o-rld" to BACKFIRE spectacularly on summoners who think its a good idea to rob someone of their own life and force them to do your dirty work

hmmm~ one of summoned "heroes" becomes the biggest and nastiest nightmare of this new world? yes-plz

I plan to keep watching but it needs to do something spectacular to elevate itself from leaning hard on such an outdated trope.

It's doing a real tropefest and we haven't started on the Slave tropes yet - what fun!

To be honest though - fantasy is all tropes so best just go with the flow or avoid fantasy?

It has to do with the traditional samurai opinion on shields, which is that anyone who uses a shield is in opposition to bushido, a coward who is afraid to accept death in service of his lord. Shields weren't for Samurai, and each of the other summoned heroes each adopts the personality of a samurai almost immediately (making me wonder if Samurai still exist in their world) only Naofumi, who exists in a world like ours (if not our world) where the samurai exist only in anime, doesn't instantly hate their weapon - but even he was dismissive, "its more like armor than anything else".

Both Victorian and Elizabethan England were patriarchies, both were ruled by Queens.

Sometimes a ruling dynasty finds itself with no heir of the preferred gender, and has, to keep power within the dynasty, sets the daughter (or son in this world) on their throne - perhaps the queen died and their crown princess is too young to rule, making the King her regent.

Or it could just be something the author overlooked.

I did note the same thing yesterday as well lol

Sounds like Overlord minus the summoners.

Or A Wild Last Boss Appeared if it ever gets an adaptation.

well, Ainz wasn't summoned by some bunch of creepos and no-one dumped obligations on him to "go there and get urself mutilated/killed for our sake" as reward *if* u survive we will maybe return you back home, or maybe not

so he's disqualified

Ainz flaw is that he clearly lack reason to truly harm anyone… peel nails from people for amusement and such

You'd probably enjoy the reactions of the summoners in A Wild Last Boss Appears.

While I' was a bit annoyed with the "magical video game interface" troupe amongst other things, I was looking forward to this series getting animated. It's nice we got a good 40+ minute episode to better shape the world and build up the premise of the show. Off the bat the show is going about things differently from manga but still being very faithful. Honestly I think that's a good thing since there are things in the manga that can be infuriating to read and just how unfair things get for the Shield Hero. But I feel the anime has done a nice job taking that edge off that premise without totally removing the overall feel of the situation that the Shield Hero is in. Not sure if the LN had the same issues the manga had with the tone and pacing or the Anime is just starting off better because it's paying more mind to the LN then it is the manga.

I read some of the manga a while back and if I remember right the "Video game interface" is a plot point, there is actually more to it than appears but to figure it, out all four heroes have to actually talk to each other.

I've read the manga up to chapter 50, and my gripe was that it was too emo, and that the plot lurched around like a very drunk man trying to walk in a straight line. The author never seemed know what tone he wanted to take, and some of the plot developments seemed like very clumsy retcons.

Having said that, some of the scenarios were really good, and it seems like a lot of money has been spent on the adaptation, so should be interesting.
