Plot Summary

Iwatani Naofumi, a run-of-the-mill otaku, finds a book in the library that summons him to another world. He is tasked with joining the sword, spear, and bow as one of the Four Cardinal Heroes and fighting the Waves of Catastrophe as the Shield Hero. Excited by the prospect of a grand adventure, Naofumi sets off with his party. However, merely a few days later, he is betrayed and loses all his money, dignity, and respect. Unable to trust anyone anymore, he employs a slave named Raphtalia and takes on the Waves and the world. But will he really find a way to overturn this desperate situation?

My personal thoughts on the first episode

It's a pretty neat start considering the way they introduced the world fiction content and some character building already. We meet Naofumi whose life changes drastically after being summoned as a hero. Might have to get used to his voice but it definitely suits him as a protagonist. The part about the shield plays a major part to his character gimmick. Some of the other heroes gets some cameos but we'll find out more about them soon.

So he gets asked to save the world so no doubt this story will also focus a lot on that. Really has a lot of potential tbh. Animation quality also looks solid on most parts so I hope they can keep that level of consistency.

As I recall this is a 2-cour, I think there's enough time to develop a decent portion of the story (although I do expecting some rushing some time or later)

Episode 1

Naofumi couldn't have been dealt a worse hand as all he can use is a shield, and is considered chopped liver compared to everybody else. As if that wasn't enough, he was framed by Myne for sexually assaulting her and is now a wanted man. It's a tough life as is, but having these perceived character problems, he's definitely got his work cut out.

I can see why there's so much hype for this show. It's definitely not your ordinary isekai show, especially if the MC can only use a shield for his weapon of choice, which means the MC isn't some OP freak who can just do that to get himself out of this situation.

Very excited for this series. Went into the first episode not knowing anything about the story. Only thing I researched was the VA's and boy I love the cast! (Sakuta, my boy!)

Can't wait to continue and see where it goes!

While I' was a bit annoyed with the "magical video game interface" troupe amongst other things, I was looking forward to this series getting animated. It's nice we got a good 40+ minute episode to better shape the world and build up the premise of the show. Off the bat the show is going about things differently from manga but still being very faithful. Honestly I think that's a good thing since there are things in the manga that can be infuriating to read and just how unfair things get for the Shield Hero. But I feel the anime has done a nice job taking that edge off that premise without totally removing the overall feel of the situation that the Shield Hero is in. Not sure if the LN had the same issues the manga had with the tone and pacing or the Anime is just starting off better because it's paying more mind to the LN then it is the manga.

It's so far doing a much better job in the pacing and varying the tone for the series. The manga kind of piles on the crap that happens to Shield Hero and really really puts the readers through quite a bit before getting some pay off. Honestly that's what worried me the most with the news of a Anime adaptation. If the kept the same kind of tension and tone, I could imagine a good number if people getting equally annoyed or upset. The Anime has some nice small moments of redemption for Shield Hero which are done really well that it gives viewers a bit of hope for his story. As well as giving Shield Hero back some control over his life with some of the changes and addition to the dialogue and story. More so then the manga seem to do in the beginning. It's one thing being able to power through a couple of chapters to get to that pay off but having to week to week with this series, I applaud the fans for sticking with it cause it really does get pretty cool after a while.

Quality-wise the show is definitely living up to my personal hype and the director's... well, direction style for the story is very refreshing compared to how I felt when I started the manga. Really the manga did piss me off for a bit. If it wasn't for the fact I got into the series later rather then sooner, and could read a good chunk of it; I may have dropped it.

Liking it a lot. Felt very much like a hodge podge of several popular shows at first but took a fun turn and I really enjoyed this early preview thing.

I was big into reading this light novel, but when I caught up to the recent translations I stopped and just never made my way back. Even so I was excited to see they made an anime of it and so far the first episode lived up to my expectations. I can't wait for more to come.

You know... I was a bit annoyed about how everyone keeps going on and on and on about how the shield sucks and it's not a weapon. You can do all sorts of nasty, brutal things with a shield.

Granted, that's almost depicted in videogames, but still.

Aside from that, I rather liked it. It's an actually good-looking show, it's got some very interesting ideas, the very, very bitter protagonist is rather fun to watch.

I think they just wanted to bash the weapon.

So this is the infamous Shield Bro series. I don't know much about it but massive underdog characters are easy for me to sympathise with.

Whilst the woman was too obvious, it did move the story along nicely.
They said it was a matriarchal society, yet they have a King as ruler

As for shields being lame - mates, I don't fancy any part of my body being smashed to pieces one bit.

That slave at the end looks like the girl at the start of this thread - post time skip perhaps.
Looking forward to more.

Reposting my response since the other thread got locked:

That was every bit as edgy as I remember from the manga. Though I had forgotten just how shoddy most of the setup was. In what MMO is a tank ever considered "for losers"? For that matter, how did the country expect legendary weapons to work together against the Waves if they actively interfere with one another?

The setup just felt like everything was designed specifically to screw our titular hero over. I'm still on the fence as to how well that sets everything up from a story-telling perspective.

Loved the 1st episode! The Shield Hero seems cool to, not annoying or whiny and I like how he just embraces the “bad guy” reputation since that chick lied on him (the worse type of lie too!). So I’m looking forward to this anime a lot.

How many episodes are we getting? Also, what day does the nex one air, will it be Saturdays?
