I've been having this problem, too -- German subs instead of English. No solution found just yet.

On my pc (using chrome I get German) however when I watch Naruto when using my Ipad in the crunchyroll app I can get English Subtitles.

4 months since original post and this is still a problem which is a complete F*cking joke considering we pay a subscription to watch the Anime legally in our subtitles and yet suddenly we lose the function to and have to rely on third party software to fix something that they themselves should have fixed ages ago. Pathetic service yet again from this ever increasing joke of a company.

For anyone with Chrome having this issue, download the Crunchyroll HTML5 Chrome extension

Then, load the episode that you want to watch.
Click on the Gear icon in the lower left of the player window
Click on Subtitles
Choose one of the "Unknown" subtitles. One of them will be the english subtitles

It's unfortunate that there is no response from Crunchyroll on this issue. It's been VERY frustrating.

Solution:

Set Default Language to nothing, or as it says on the list: ---

This will let the built-in subtitles show again.
In the case of Naruto (first series) it is the default yellow english subtitles, just like the good old days

I don't have an option at all to set the subtitles...where are you doing this?

I was watching Naruto yesterday ep1-4 with English subs and suddenly today they are all German again...

Defaults to German for me, too. I can read German passably, but would sure like some English subs.

I can't believe that Crunchyroll still hasn't fixed this. This is one of the most popular anime series.

Confirming, if there was any doubt, that this is STILL a problem. Using firefox currently, going to switch to chrome and see if I can get that extension to work.

It's a new thing, a few months ago I watched it in English and left off mid-episode. When I continued watching today subs were in German

After I posted before, the issue worked itself out - I have no idea how. But just now it's back.
I'm on ep 54 and it's German subs by default, no option for English or no language. Ep53 works with english.

What on earth is going on?

Update:

Doing the same thing on Safari. ep53 fine, ep54 German.
When I compare the 2, ep53 has no available options when you click the gear and then 'subtitles' (literally nothing in the list) which seems to mean default English. Looking at ep54 when you click the gear then 'subtitles' you have radio buttons for 'off' 'German' 'Brazilian' and 'Portugese'. Weird!

Those having issues on firefox, this extension helped: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/crunchyroll-html5-unofficial/?src=search

it gave me 2 more options under subtitles (unreadable garbage code, but randomly clicking between them gave me english subs and turned subs off)

I cant promise it will work for all firefox users, but the ratings are solid and i can vouch that it at least works
